Your Voice, Drawn as a Face

Sonic Portrait is the playful, experimental corner of VoiceStry: it listens to sound and draws a face from it in real time. Every voice produces a unique portrait, because the drawing is built directly from the acoustic properties of what you sing. It is part toy, part teaching tool — a way to see the qualities VRN describes, rendered as something immediately recognizable.

What Shapes the Face

Each visual feature is driven by a real property of the sound:

• Pitch → face shape. Higher pitches reshape the skull; lower pitches broaden it.
• Volume → mouth opening. Sing louder and the mouth opens wider.
• Brightness (spectral centroid) → eye size. Brighter, more forward tones — more mask and squillo — open the eyes.
• Harmonics → feature detail. A richer harmonic spectrum adds definition to the features.
• Register → color and glow. The portrait's palette shifts as you move between gears.
• Vibrato animates the whole portrait with a gentle oscillation.

Choosing What Draws the Portrait

Like the Live Analyzer, Sonic Portrait can take three input sources: your own Live Singing, Room / External audio from a nearby speaker or person, or a Browser Tab playing YouTube or Spotify. Adjust Sensitivity up for quiet or distant sources and turn on Noise Suppression in a busy room.

Why It's More Than a Toy

Because the face is built from spectral centroid, harmonic content, and register — the same measurements that underlie Vocal Resonance Notation — the portrait gives you an intuitive, instant read on your tone. A bright, ringing [H+++, Sq+] note draws a wide-eyed, luminous face; a dark, breathy [P++, Br] note draws something softer and dimmer. Sing the same pitch two ways and watch the portrait change, and you are seeing the difference between resonance strategies that the numbers alone might not make vivid. It is the most fun way on the site to learn what “brightness” and “harmonics” actually mean.
